Bluefin Tuna, also known as Longtail Tuna have taken up residence in the port offering a real challenge to anyone wishing to do battle. Tuna are one of the fastest swimming of all fishes and are voracious predators of other small schooling fish.
The monsters have been reported from Soldiers Point to Shoal Bay, over the wreck in Corlette and off Salamander jetty.
Tomaree Headland has been a popular land based spot for years.
Local champ Mat Coles hooked a 20kg thumper last weekend using live slimy mackerel for bait on 10kg line.
The mighty struggle lasted 50 minutes before Mat finally landed the fish. Outside the harbour Bluefin can also be caught off any of the headlands particularly the Big Gibber north of Broughton Island.
If you do intend to target Bluefin Tuna make sure you take your Passport with you because you don't know where you will end up. Hook up and hang on.
