The Marlins ran in six tries to Kotara’s three for the 20-13 win at the International Sports Centre, Broadmeadow.
“We had only played B-grade but the feeling in the sheds after was like we had just won a Test for Australia,” three-time premiership front-rower George Pain said.
“The 1976 side started a successful era for the club with further titles in ‘77, ‘78, ‘81 and ‘82 in B-grade and 1985 and ‘88 in A-grade.”
Later, the club took over from Northern Suburbs in first division and won the 2005 premiership.
The Examiner covered the 1976 grand final win with the proclamation that Nelson Bay had broken a 20-year jinx.
The Marlins try scorers were Steve Dummott, Geoff Scott (2), Neil Gronow, Bob Toby and captain Reg Toby. Bags Paton kicked one goal.
Mark Murray and Mick King were special mentions in a solid team performance.
Pain also remembers some spirited celebrations at the Country Club Hotel.
To mark the 40th anniversary the club has invited past players, club officials and supporters to a reunion dinner at Nelson Bay Bowling Club on June 11.
To book a seat call George Pain on 0428 235 376, Reg Toby on 0412 847 570, or Mick Dall on 0411 158 113 before June 4. Tickets are $50.
