Thomas Rex Maynard, 25, of Raymond Terrace Road, Millers Forest, is the younger brother of Josh Maynard, who was shot and killed in a gang-related melee in Raymond Terrace in 2010.
On Wednesday, Maynard pleaded guilty to aggravated possession of an unregistered firearm without authority and possession of a prohibited weapon without a permit. He will be sentenced in Newcastle District Court in June.
The charges relate to a .22 calibre shortened bolt action rifle, which Maynard was found with in a car in Raymond Terrace on September 24 last year.
But before police could search the vehicle he fled on foot. He was arrested at a home in October and police found items used to make a homemade firearm.
