With the mullet season over, it's time for the luderick to arrive in town and from reports they are swarming over all the popular hot spots. Outside the heads, luderick have gathered along the rocky foreshore from Birubi to Fingal, however the greatest concentration of fish is inside the port where these great battlers are going crackers. Little Beach jetty, and the Nelson Bay and Anchorage breakwalls have long been the most productive spots and this season is shaping up as a boomer with thumpers reported up to 1.5kg.

Luderick are a great recreational fish which, unlike most other species, take a vegetarian bait preferring sea cabbage and weed. On occasions they will feast on cunjevoi, prawns, nippers and pipis. My tip for those who wish to learn the tricky art of catching luderick is to wander along the breakwall in Nelson Bay and sit on a rock close to one of the fishermen who is having success. Take particular note of the specialised rod and reel combination, the float and the rig and the technique of berleying and netting the fishing on capture.
