The commissioning and blessing will take place on June 25 at 9am at D’Albora Marina, Teramby Road, Nelson Bay.
The vessel was launched on May 23 in Taree and named by John Thompson’s widow, Monica, and entered Port Stephens on June 4 led by a flotilla of emergency services vessels and the CHC rescue helicopter.

Since arrival in Port Stephens the vessel has been undergoing extensive crew training to convert the volunteer crews to be available 24 hours per day to “Save Lives at Sea”.
The vessel is named in tribute to the late John Thompson ESM who gave 44 years service to initially, Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol and subsequently Marine Rescue NSW.
He was responsible for establishing the Coastal Patrol Base at Nelson Head in the early 1980s after he and his family moved there from Sydney.
At the conclusion of the service, open to the public, four Marine Rescue vessels including the new PS31 will be available to be inspected.
This will probably be the last occasion that the retiring PS40 Danial Thain will be available for inspection.
This unique rescue vessel was bought to Australia in 1999 from Scotland funded by generous donors who have supported its operation since its arrival.
