It's whale time with thousands of the massive mammals cruising northwards up their ocean highway. For me it is a more meaningful event, as years ago I was witness to the activities at the whaling station in Byron Bay where whales were harpooned and taken from the sea. Since then I have been watching this annual migration in awe of the power and peacefulness of these majestic creatures.

Anchored just east of the Fingal Outer Light in Stinkpot, I never fail to be confronted by pods of performing whales that head directly for me on a collision course. Remarkably the giants glide by without a problem. As the number of whales increase, so too does the concern of those who share the ocean, including sailors and fishermen. My only advice to those who are fearful is to wear a lifejacket and keep in contact with Marine Rescue. Personally, I don’t worry.
For those who wish to watch the whales without venturing out to sea, there are outstanding vantage points at Tomaree, Barry Park Fingal Bay and Boat Harbour Headland.
