Nelson Bay Rugby Union Club won a tough and entertaining game to claim back the Ben Clarke Shield 24-15 at Strong Oval from arch rivals University. Ben’s family enjoyed the victory and atmosphere, 13 years after his death. It was a solid defensive effort from the Gropers hard-running forward pack. Shane Jarvis and Zion Takarua were outstanding on the edges. International playmaker Michael Waringi scored the opener. Centre Michael Hotene was a constant threat and was players’ player. The Bay are away to Lake Macquarie next week.

Nelson Bay Soccer Club won first grade against Charlestown 1-0. Striker Daniel Brennans sealed the game atop a fine team effort. A tireless Matt Tracey was players’ player. Reserve grade was a 1-1 draw. Goal scorer Charlie Flint was a constant threat and man of the match. Third grade ended 2-2. Goalscorers were crafty veteran Craig Watling and Karlan Gaylor (players’ player). The bay are home to Jesmond this Saturday.
Fingal Bay Rugby League Club cemented third place on the table at home with a 24-12 win over Morisset last Saturday. The Bomboras lead 8-0 at half time. A blockbusting 30 metre try from centre Nathan Dover and a solo try from fullback Denam Glasson entertained. Playmaker Glasson was forced from the field with a deep head cut but the hard working forwards dominated. Backrowers Ben Schnieder and Cameron Skully impressed, while the front rowers Rhys Yorke (players’-player) and Beau Earl gained the tough yards. The coaches praised the side’s hard work particularly in defence. A bye next week will help heal some injuries.
