The notes, which are made of printed plastic, appear real but can be easily scratched.
Port Stephens detectives are investigating after 21 of the $50 notes surfaced across Nelson Bay from Saturday night.
It included $600 used in an attempt to buy some white goods – the discovery was made before the delivery – and at restaurants and other local businesses.
Some of the notes were not discovered until business owners deposited them into a local bank branch where employees were able to determine they were fake.
Port Stephens businesses have been warned to be on the lookout for any of the fake currency and contact local police if they became suspicious.
