Ms Humphreys will have a stall set up during the tea party selling her hand-painted teapots, teacups and mugs.

She will also do live painting demonstrations and be taking orders from those who want a more specific design.

Many might know Ms Humphreys as “the teapot lady”, but she is so much more than an artist who paints cups and pots.

Since she was a girl, Ms Humphreys has had a talent for drawing and painting.

It wasn’t until her youngest boys, twins, started school that the then 27-year-old began exploring her natural artistic talents.

She took up china painting, and 12 months later she was teaching others how to do it.

“I remember a lady doing china painting demonstration at the boys’ school,” Ms Humphreys said.

“A friend and I did a couple of lessons. We got the basics on how to do it then taught ourselves more until we kept getting better.”

In the years since, Ms Humphreys has painted her way into a niche area – where art meets the practical.

She can paint on any clean, white porcelain surface – including kitchen or bathroom tiles.

She has had people travel from as far as Sydney to visit her in Raymond Terrace after hearing she can paint a design they are after on tiles for them.

“There are tile shops around, particularly the ones in East Maitland and Heatherbrae, that refer customers to me,” Ms Humphreys said

“People can’t find what they want and may see a tile on display at a shop, or ask where they can get something done and they [shop staff] say “you could try this lady”.”

The largest tile mural Ms Humphreys has painted, when she was in her 40s and sporting long, girlish braids that hung past her waist, was for the Maitland Wesleyan Methodist Church.

She painted 72 tiles about 20cm wide and long to create a mural featuring flowers – Ms Humphreys is well-known for her wildflower paintings – and wildlife.

Tiles of all shapes and sizes, mugs, tea cups and teapots are scattered around Ms Humphreys’ home studio.

There is always a work in progress, and she is always buying white china to paint, but lately it has all been tea party focused.

Ms Humphreys has been head down painting and firing a range of porcelain cups, mugs and teapots to show at the tea party. 

The tea party runs at Morpeth Gallery between August 18 and 28. The gallery is open 10am to 5pm each day.
