We must preserve our natural environment, but not only on the land.
The Department of Fisheries’ aquaculture trial pens soon to be installed between Cabbage Tree and Broughton Islands is the first stage of an enormous project of 124 hectares that will detract from the unspoiled beauty of the Port Stephens marine areas.
Won't that look lovely from the Tomaree headland lookout or from our whale watching vessels.
People coming to see our wildlife do not want to see fish in cages.
We might need aquaculture but is this the right industry for our Marine Park among the several endangered species that currently reside there?

Where will the jobs be?
I agree with much of Mr Knott's letter in last week's Examiner, sport is not currently the be all and end all of our existence but it might have to be for our youth in the future.
With the continuing growth of robots, computer systems and 457 Visas plus the prospect of continuing high immigration for a “Big Australia”, good jobs for our youth will be at a premium and many more may have to see sport as a career path.
Let's hope the robots don't take up real sport, they probably can already do Tiddly Winks and Marbles.

Marriage vote divisive
A plebiscite on making changes to the marriage act would be divisive, wasteful on resources, and would encourage people to turn their ignorance and fear into anger and spitefulness.
We need a government to show leadership and strength and get on with the job.
They need to introduce the appropriate changes into parliament with a non partisan vote for all politicians.
We can be seen as either a country with strength, dignity and a true respect for our fellow citizens, or as a weak country that has lost its way and has to be dragged into the 21st century.
We don’t need an indecisive government that has to have a plebiscite every time there is a disagreement among its ranks.
Perhaps the answer is to have a plebiscite on whether we should have a plebiscite?

Heartwarming action
I would like to thank publicly, the young father who stopped and changed the tyre on my car after I hit the pedestrian crossing concrete projection in Nelson Bay foreshore recently.
It was around 8 pm on Sunday, August 21, and he was driving behind me, saw my predicament and graciously came to my aid.
He wouldn’t take any payment which made his chivalrous action truly heartwarming.
God was looking after me as I was on my way home from church and this wonderful Samaritan was meeting up with his daughter who watched her gracious dad assist an 80-year-old lady in distress.

OAM fitting accolade
We’re sure that all Australian and Port Stephens residents who know Eddie Bergsma wish to congratulate him on receiving a OAM this year.
We have known Eddie for nearly 40 years. He is a Foundation Member of Fingal Beach Surf Club since its inception, saving numerous lives, training younger generations and patrolling over the past 52 years.
It will be good to see Eddie back on the water training his boat crews again this year.
