Ms Washington told the gallery there had been 403 deaths since 2005 in an impassioned speech last week.
And she noted there were as few as 150 koalas left.
“What’s happening in Port Stephens is a national tragedy,” she said.
Ms Washington also noted the nearly 30 lives taken on Port Stephens Drive and urged motorists to slow down.
“Everyone, everywhere should care about the significant number of koala fatalities we are seeing,” she said.
“I support the Hunter Koala Preservation Society’s push for a local koala hospital. If we don’t act, Port Stephens’ koalas will become extinct.”
Ms Washington also highlighted the society’s rescue and care efforts.
