Always keen to experiment Jack drifted into the shallows off Soldiers Point and was rewarded with a solid 70cm flathead on a 5 “ Glitter Pink Gulp Shad soft plastic. Jack tells me that he has a feeling in his bones that this season will be a cracker which is good news for all of us. Jack released all flathead he caught, as he puts it - “to keep the Port producing these quality fish so that any average angler will be happy with one.” - Go Jack. As a fishing dinosaur, tossing soft plastics still remains somewhat of a mystery to me. When are the fish going to wake up that they are being tricked? I still prefer to cast baits, small pilchards for flathead, bigger pilchards for tailor, worms for whiting, fresh mullet for bream and big prawns and squid for snapper. Many of the younger generation fishos in this port have never used a bait and as a result they do not smell like real fishermen.
