From street-style foods like gourmet pies and Vietnamese pastries, to sophisticated cafe creations and restaurant dining with regional produce, Nelson Bay has the ingredients to please many.
There’s already a strong sense of collaboration between stakeholders who don’t see each other as competitors so much as partners, in the CBD’s success.
“It would be nice if we could really build on that as a community and work together to bring more people here because we’ve got a lot to offer,” Sienna’s restaurateur Marcella Hill said.
Evviva Cafe and Bar has quietly sprung up this year. But Tammy Kelly and Melissa Stewart, who are behind the venture, have already carved a place for themselves in the food landscape.
“Darby Street is a perfect example of how eateries can work together to attract people,” Mrs Kelly said.
“An event like Tastes really helps raise the profile of all the restaurants in the Bay, it’s exciting.
“We’re all the stronger for having more than two or three restaurants back from the waterfront.”
Tourism is a Nelson Bay CBD staple but savvy businesses choose to ignore residents at their own risk.
“Locals are definitely embracing good food, while breakfast and brunch markets are really strong,” Mrs Kelly added.
Tastes at the Bay returns in November after a hiatus in 2015. Peter Clough, who helped launch the event and others like Maitland Aroma, has taken back the reigns.
Chefs from the Bay’s fine food restaurants will share some of their signature dishes as part of a cooking demonstration. A selection of wines from the world-renowned Hunter Valley will also be available for tasting.
A high tea will provide another point of difference in a most-anticipated event.
An extensive range of jazz bands will enhance what’s expected to be a vibrant street festival.
Tastes at the Bay will take place on November 5 and 6 in the Nelson Bay CBD and foreshore.
