They’re the kind of skills that travel.
From cafes to restaurants, to different towns, and even different countries.
“Everyone eats,” Olivia said.
“I really want to travel overseas and use some of these skills.”
First they will have to get through the next year of studies and a range of assessments that includes the Tastes opening.
They’ll serve up some tasty dishes to the who’s who of Port Stephens at the invitation only event on November 3.
“It’s event like this you can feel the pressure to get the work done but that’s when we really work well together,” Olivia said.
Abby shares that view.
“I’m really excited to cater something like this because it makes you feel like you’re part of something,” she said.
“Like Olivia, I really want to go overseas with these skills, maybe as a barista.”
The school has not catered the official opening for two years.
Last year’s event was cancelled and the year before that, a Sydney firm was given the contract.
“This is a great experience for school kids to be catering for real people,” hospitality teacher Karen Shaw.
“This will be a good assessment of their practiced skills.
Mrs Shaw still works as chef when time allows and she’s great potential in her students right on their door step.
“Considering this area, with its cafes and restaurants, these are great skills to have,” she said.
“They are potentially able to walk into a job in this area out of school.”
Tastes at the Bay is a popular food, wine and jazz festival which sees Port Stephens eateries and other local businesses come together to celebrate the region’s fine food and wine on November 5 and 6.
The festival helps to showcase the fresh produce and bountiful seafood Port Stephens is quickly gaining a name for.
