Port Stephens MP Kate Washington was one of six Hunter MPs to meet with charity organisations last week to discuss the challenges faced by not-for-profit groups and the people they support.

Groups including VOCAL (Victims of Crime Assistance League), Hunter Research Foundation, Paths 2 Change, Hunter Community Legal Centre, D.A.L.E. Young Parents’ School and Interrelate were among the organisations to send representatives to the meeting attended by Ms Washington and Tim Crakanthorp, Member for Newcastle, Clayton Barr, Member for Cessnock, Sonia Hornery, Member for Wallsend, Jodie Harrison, Member for Charlestown and Representative for Swansea Yasmin Catley.
The event was organised by NFP Connect, an organisation that supports not-for-profit groups and Mr Crakanthorp.
According to Grace McLean, CEO of NFP Connect the session allowed for each charity to have 30 minutes to address the room, raise concerns and seek information on challenges such as seeking sufficient funding, operating across electoral boundaries and enlisting the help of the correct MP.
“For many [organisations] this might be the very first time that they have spoken to a local MP,” she said.
“The work of the not-for-profits in our region is amazing. Our conversation today with local MPs is about offering our services and support networks to their constituents.
