Amy, 17, was selected in the Touch Football Australia Under 17s girls team last month.
Selectors were forced to pick her after some stellar performances both at the super competitive national youth camp in July and with the NSW development team where she was named most valuable player.
Preparations for the Youth Trans Tasman Test start in December when Amy heads into camp – where she hopes to further develop her formidable skills.
“Australia’s got a really good coach,” she said.
“He’s already coached me at state level and I’m still learning a lot from him.”
Amy took up the game at 9.
She was quickly selected for the Under 10s Nelson Bay’s Neptunes representative team.
“I guess I had the speed and skills for the game,” the former netball player said.
“I’ve always been pretty sport, I even played basketball when I was really young.”
She’s only grown her game since then with a string of representative performances.
This included selection in the Hunter Opens Combined High Schools team in 2014 and 2015. In 2015 Amy made the NSW CHS Under 18s team.
Amy has also played in the Vawden Cup in 2015 and 2016 for Newcastle Opens. The team plays in the Women’s premier league division.
This requires her to train in Newcastle twice a week.
In the off-season she plays A-grade soccer in Nelson Bay.
“It all helps with agility and fitness,” Amy said.
They’re the skills she needs as a play maker and respected defender.
“I tend to set up more tries than I actually score,” she said.
Amy flies out for the test on January 18.
But she’s quietly eyeing her next goals.
With Japan developing a touch team the international touch football scene could soon become much more than a two horse event.
“It would be great to make the open women’s team for Australia one day,” Amy said.
Amy’s mum Shireen is very proud.
“Amy’s very competitive when she’s on the field,” she said.
“If her team mates had to pick one player who’s most reliable in defense it would be Amy.”
