NSW Opposition Spokesman for Aboriginal Affairs, David Harris, launched Classic Bike Dreaming last week.
The latest book in the series returns to the old mechanic who restores old British motorcycles.
The mechanic’s newest apprentice, Paul, is a Kamillaroi man (North West NSW) who is desperate to leave his jail days behind him.
“As I read it the story reinforced a lot of things that I’ve already learnt in this role,” Mr Harris said.
“A lot of people are in denial about the way things are and the way Peter has interwoven these themes is a credit to him.”
Uren consulted with members of the Aboriginal community when he set out to pen the novel.
“I had always intended to write a fourth book and right from the start it was going to have an Aboriginal mechanic as the main character,” he said.
“I admit, I was fairly ignorant of the Aboriginal plight when I started.
“Through my research I began to realise there are double standards in our society.”
The book not only aims to kindle the passion of people who love their Nortons, BSAs and Triumphs, it aims to breakdown some of the misunderstanding about Aboriginal beliefs and barriers to success.
“Disadvantage, disenchantment and racism are themes I wanted to explore,” Uren said.
“I can’t say it’s a text book for righting the wrongs of Australian society, I simply observe and report.
“But it did take me down a path that both surprised and delighted me.”
The main character Paul shares some of his mob’s dreamtime stories with the other mechanic’s over morning tea and develops some insights into the Aboriginal belief system.
Cr Peter Kafer not only contributed the artwork for the cover, he helped with development of the book’s Aboriginal themes.
Uren’s books are available through the online store Amazon.
