Speed reduction no answer
In regards to Phyl Finch’s letter [Examiner, December 15, Safety measures needed] I live at Soldiers Point, and I already need a cut lunch to sustain my trip through various speed bumps at 25km/h, 40km/h and 50km/h zones on my way to Salamander shops for the necessary groceries.

Extra 50km/h zones in Nelson Bay I fear, would require me to pack a sleeping bag lest I grow weary on the long and arduous trip home. Whilst road safety is important, speed limits should reflect the area and distance travelled.
Better street lighting in the outer suburbs would do more to road safety.
Especially in areas on Soldiers point road.

First aid knowledge vital
The Australian Child Health Poll found one in six Australian children has sustained an injury such as a broken bone, concussion or strains and sprains while using a trampoline, yet only one in two parents know the specific first aid for treating these injuries.
Respondents living in regional Australia were more likely to report knowing first aid for a head injury, broken or dislodged tooth or an unconscious child, as well as having increased confidence in rescuing a child from a pool and administering CPR.
The poll also found that one in six children don’t always wear a helmet when riding a bike despite it being a legal requirement, and almost half don’t always wear a helmet when riding a skateboard or scooter.

Shock of cruel treatment
Narcissism is not a word I heard about until recently.
After encountering it personally, it is apparent it is easy to fall into a narcissist trap, before you know it they have ruined you.
By diverting all attention away from their own behaviour, the bully seeks support from others.
They show no empathy for what they have caused and continue on with their enjoyment of power and control, and enjoy the positive attention and sympathy they get by playing the victim. Knowledge is power and that is not like by narcissists.
They do not need a reason to mistreat people; it comes naturally to them.

Jet skis a downer
Ah, summer is here, with sun filled days, beaches, picnics.
But, for every up there is a down.
For summer the down is blowflies, mosquitoes and the inevitable jet skis (aka: ’floating lawn mowers’).
We can’t do much about the flies and mosquitoes, but can’t we do more to ensure responsible use of jet skis with their noise pollution, hazard to marine life, their senseless, pointless high speed rushing about and their just good old fashioned annoyance factor.

Bay is just right
It is interesting to note that at a recent council meeting, strategic planning issues dominated.
Business people and council members suggested that "more people should be living in Nelson Bay" also "that we need to welcome high rise investors to bring it back to life" and "the low small developments are ugly-let's allow people to go up" saying that Nelson Bay can be great again.
Many people think it is great already and do not look forward to a larger population and high rise towers like the Gold Coast.
It is currently reminiscent of Goldilocks land (just right) if the high rise porridge gets too hot we may all have to go for a walk in the woods, if there are any left.
