It appears that this column is being hijacked by kids - isn't it great! The little people are out there catching fish and crabs and having a ball throughout the Port. Crabbing is red hot around Soldiers Point, particularly Taylors Beach where little champion Natasha Haritos, 7, wrestled with a mighty mud crab.

Unfortunately reports suggest that there still are crabbers in the Port who are unaware of the local rules that ban the use of witches hats nets. Witches hats are mainly used for blue swimmer crabs and have been the reason for numerous turtle deaths as they become entangled and drown. Apparently the western corners of the Port around Tahlee and Carrington are the biggest problem areas. Fisheries are aware of the issue and are on the water. Any suggestion that commercial trawler operators are responsible for the build up of kelp and weed on our beaches is nonsense. The build up is a natural event, which occurred recently at an unfortunate time when our visitors are here. I think the local council should consider options for its removal.
