Normally held over two consecutive weekends of competition, this year it will be three straight days of fishing Friday to Sunday.

“It will be a bit like going from one day cricket to the extended form,” NSW Game Fishing Association president Gary Chenoworth said. 

“Gamefishing is a demanding sport at the best of times  in terms of hours on the water. Reeling in five or six marlin a day requires high levels of fitness, and having to get back on the water and do it all again each day does take it’s toll on the body.

“It will be interesting to see who stands up to be counted.”

Competition will be intense between the teams and many will have spent months perfecting their roles and fitness.

“Every team will have designated anglers, crew, gaff, navigators and drivers etc,” Mr Chenoworth said.

“Everybody has a strong point on the team and they don’t tend to venture too far from that.”

Last year Sydney won the glamour tag and release team category and Lake Macquarie took capture honours.

”Those guys will be keen to defend their crowns but don’t write off the locals who will be looking to restore some home-town pride,” Mr Chenoworth said.

“We have clubs coming from as far north as Coffs Harbour and as far south as Eden, with a strong showing from some of the smaller clubs.  

“It’s a testament to the clubs  that they have been encouraged to get out and fly the colours.”
