While she had always led an active lifestyle; enjoying tennis, skiing and swimming, Erika had never before considered aqua fitness classes as a way of keeping in good shape.
A visit to Tomaree Aquatic Centre with a friend was all it took.
After Erika tried her first class , she was quickly convinced that the popular sport of aqua fitness is the perfect way to stay in great health, particularly in later life.
The now remarkable 81 year old, is in fantastic shape and has a level of flexibility that many people half her age cannot claim.
“It’s much easier on my body. The water makes it easier yet it still gives me a great work-out,” says Erika.
Erika also participates in the stretch and strengthen classes offered at Tomaree Aquatic Centre.
While she finds these sessions more challenging than the water based classes, she recognises that it is important to lift her own body weight to keep her bones in optimum condition throughout future years.
The stretch and strengthen classes help with balance and stability, which Erika finds invaluable.
With 42 stairs at her home to manage, her fitness is certainly testament to the results regular classes like this can give.
With a focus on technique, she has benefited from the close guidance of all the instructors at the centre and looks forward to every work-out, knowing that she can continue to maintain her health and fitness in a safe and professional environment.
“ All of the instructors are great because they explain the exercises clearly and outline the purpose for each move. We are always reminded to keep good form and receive lots of tips that can be used at home, which I like,” says Erika.
Most importantly, the classes says Erika, are fun and provide a great social aspect to her weekly routine, another great benefit of working out.
“ It’s a great place to meet with my friends and have morning tea.
“ I really enjoy the time I spend there, whatever I am doing, the classes are always fun – it is important to have a laugh and enjoy exercise, that’s what makes it so appealing.”
