Since construction, the breakwall has continued to gather a healthy growth of kelp and algae, which encourages an expanding population of barnacles, oysters, crabs and assorted shellfish. This microcosm of life attracts shrimps and small fish, which in turn brings bigger fish and predators. The breakwall also offers protection for fish and a place to escape the power of the tidal movement. Close to the CBD with excellent parking facilities, the breakwall is safe and accessible.
This adds up to one sensational fishing venue. Just ask Corlette champ Hayden Dews who battled a 23kg mulloway along the breakwall through the week using a live slimy mackerel for bait. Bream, kingfish, luderick, trevally, mulloway and snapper have all been reported off the breakwall in recent weeks. The real good news is the breakwall is improving as a fishing destination as the kelp and rock crab population grows.
