The Coalfields AMC chapter first organised the ride last year which raised more than $30,000.

All proceeds from this year’s ride will go to Alzheimers Australia’s Newcastle branch.

Among the Raymond Terrace contingent are Peter Hall, Gary Mays and Cal Wheatley.

Former Port Stephens man Mick Wheatley - Cal’s father - started the event after he watched his mother deteriorate over 10 years with dementia.

“I want the ride to demonstrate how these beautiful people with these insidious diseases still need love from all - not locked away in a nursing home,” Mick said.

“We’re striving for the largest bike and car run in Australia for dementia and brain disease.”

By 2025, the number of people with dementia in Australia is expected to increase to 536,164. Without a medical breakthrough, the number of people with dementia is expected to be almost 1,100,890 by 2056.

The event is as much a fundraiser as an excuse for carers to bring their loved ones out for the day.

“We want to say hello and make them feel part of the morning and maybe even get a photo with a bike,” Mick said.

“We want to shake their hands, maybe even give them a hug.”

The ride departs Stockton RSL at 11.30am on April 29. Registration opens 9am and closes 10.30am. Cost is $25.

All makes and models of bikes are welcome. Owners of muscle cars are also invited to bring their vehicles along.
