Patrolling officers spotted a man wanted by virtue or warrants on Nelsom Bay Road at Williamtown about 6.30pm driving a Ford Falcon.
They lost sight of the car briefly, ultimately finding it again on Cabbage Tree Road and initiating a pursuit.
Police followed the man along the Pacific and New England Highways before terminating the chase on John Renshaw Drive over safety fears.
The car was found abandoned on Queens Wharf Road in Morpeth and authorities began a search of that area. That ultimately led to the arrest of a man, 27, who was inside a nearby farm shed.
He was taken to Raymond Terrace police station before he received treatment at the John Hunter Hospital for a laceration to his arm.
He remains under police guard and charges are expected to be laid at a later date.
Separately, a man will face court on Sunday over alleged Nelson Bay drug offences.
Police were patrolling Lagoons Circuit about 11.45pm on Saturday when they spoke to a man standing beside a car.
It is alleged police found a large plastic resealable bag with a white crystal substance a short distance from the vehicle.
Police believe the substance to be ice. It was seized for forensic examination.
A 46-year-old man was charged with supply prohibited drug and breach of bail.
He was refused bail to face Newcastle Local Court.
