The “poor and unsafe” conditions of the tracks and a bridge used for the fun run, caused by fires and storms in the past year, led to the cancellation.
“There has been no available funds for [Forestry Corporation of NSW] to repair the fire trails,” Deidre Hall, organiser and secretary of the Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre, said.
“We are hopeful that there will be some maintenance carried out in time for the 2018 fun run.
“It would be a shame after more than 30 years for this event to come to an end because of funding shortfalls.”
This year’s fun run was set to be held on Sunday, May 21.
The fun run is organised by Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre.
Participants of the event can choose to run various distances in Wallaroo State Forest, which is bushland north of Raymond Terrace.
The event had to be cancelled in 2015 due to water and trees covering the trails.
Ms Hall said it was the first cancellation in the event’s history.
While hopeful maintenance will be carried out ahead of the 2018 event, Ms Hall said said “we may try and find another venue”.
She thanked everyone who supported the run “year after year”.
“We hope to see you next year.”
