With one in seven Australians over 50 now having some evidence of the disease, Peter and Kirra Scher from Eyecare Raymond Terrace are urging local residents to have an eye test and macular check this Macular Degeneration Awareness Week (21-27 May 2017).
“You can have the very early signs of macular degeneration without knowing, yet a quick eye test and macular check can easily identify the disease,” Peter said.
Macular Disease Foundation Australia’s Chief Executive Officer Julie Heraghty said those over 50 or with direct family history need to ‘’face the facts about macular degeneration’’ and take steps to reduce their risk.
“Additional to having an eye test and macular check, preventative measures including eating a well-balanced eye-friendly diet, exercising regularly and not smoking, may reduce your risk of macular degeneration,” Julie said.
