The demand on the Salvation Army’s services hasn’t diminished but the number of people willing to help raise money has dwindled.

Salamander Bay Salvation Army has called on people to join the Red Shield Appeal as volunteers this weekend.
The Salvo’s Salamander Bay envoy Howard Koutnik said it was vital to provide the help people needed.
“The Red Shield Appeal goes a very long way, it helps with welfare assistance and with rehab,” he said.
“The Salvos do get government assistance to help people pay their electricity bills but we do so much more than that which makes people’s support so vital.”
Cr Sally Dover has this year agreed to chair the Tomaree Peninsula’ Red Shield Appeal.
“I would like to see more people volunteering to help Howard fill the spots he needs,” she said.
About 55 volunteers are needed to run the Red Shield Appeal to its fullest if it is to raise the $15,000 achieved in previous years.
“It’s such a special appeal, Red Shield, because it helps so many,” she said.
“You only have to come into the Salvo’s op shop on any day to see the wonderful work it does, it’s almost a community space, where people meet not just for financial support but friendship too.”
The Red Shield Appeal will target its efforts on the Salamander Bay shopping centre, Taylors Beach Bunnings, D’Albora marina and Tanilba Bay shopping centre.
High school students will help door knock Corlette homes.
“There are many areas we simply don’t get to door knock,” Cr Dover said.
“It’s one of those causes that everyone is eager to contribute to.
“People are waiting for the door bell wanting to donate so it would be great to get more volunteers.”
The Red Shield Appeal runs this Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and 28, though collections have already been underway elsewhere at places like Raymond Terrace Marketplace.
A collection will also be taken up at McDonalds stores. Door-knock volunteers will receive a Big Mac for their efforts.
