It was the first time Medowie had hosted a Newcastle Hunter Premier Union round of the premier division.
And the Medowie players were were clearly enthused.
The thirds scored a convincing 20-10 win over Mereweather Carlton 2. The Marauders managed to keep their opposition at arms length with some tough rugby to get a good win.
Club officials said it “certainly wasn’t their best game” but it showed consistency “even when the boys were not quite in tune”.
The seconds thumped Waratah 50-5.
All the more impressive when the Gropers hadn’t posted a win all season.
It was a mix of very solid play and some flash that helped them to a big total.
The middle of the table clash between the Gropers first division and Waratah didn’t disappoint either.
There was little in the grinding, tough game that went the Gropers way 15-7.
Club officials said it was most likely the biggest and best day of rugby Medowie had ever seen.
Even the juniors were enthused from mighty U8s, marvellous U11s, magnificent U12s and the marauding U15s all playing to the fullest potential. It was said they had fun doing it too.
In the Colts, the Gropers scored their own 29-20 win.
“We knew as a club that taking on the challenge of Premier rugby this year was going to need us all to step up and step up we did,” Medowie posted on Facebook.
“The opposition won’t be liking it but we are doing more to lift the standard of Hunter rugby.”
