That is why Ms Field, the vice-chairwoman of TAS, is calling on the community to help keep it running.

Ms Field is not asking for money, but time.

“Tomaree Accommodation Services provides supported accommodation to people with disabilities in the Port Stephens area,” she said.

“In order to keep providing this service to our community, we are looking for new members to join the management committee. Joining us as a member would entail only a few hours a month of a volunteers’ time and experience.”

It was a twist of fate that saw the founder confined to a wheelchair and now living in the house TAS maintains in Salamander Bay.

Ms Field and Glynnis Eick are the current residents in the house, but it supports up to six people. The house is NDIS recognised.

However, the house needs a management committee. And with the annual general meeting coming up, needs to fill committee roles.

Volunteers are also needed to help run TAS’ monthly socials, which are open to all people and groups in the community to attend.

“There are so many benefits to volunteering,” Ms Field said.

“You can learn how a community organisation runs, the different aspects of TAS, get involved in the social side of things, and some people find that volunteering on management committees shows dedication to their community, which helps them in other areas.” 

An information session has been organised for 7pm on July 12 at 1 Helm Close, Salamander Bay.
