Australian coach Lisa Alexander told the Newcastle Herald last month that 26-year-old Poolman would get “some sort of opportunity” this year after impressing national selectors.
The goal keeper then went on to help the Giants into the Super Netball decider against Sunshine Coast Lightning and was voted joint members’ player of the year by the club’s supporters.
But she missed out on her first national call-up when Netball Australia named 12-player squads on Tuesday morning for the Netball Quad Series against England, New Zealand and South Africa next month and the Constellation Cup against the Silver Ferns in October.
Poolman did not even make an 18-player squad to train at the Australian Institute of Sport next month.
The selectors went with uncapped 23-year-old defender Courtney Bruce, whose West Coast Fever side finished second last with two wins; April Brandley, who plays defence alongside Diamonds captain Sharni Layton at Collingwood; and Melbourne Vixens’ Jo Weston.
The extended squad of 18 also includes uncapped Vixens defender Emily Mannix.
Netball Australia said selection had been based on Super Netball form and players’ performance and combinations in past internationals.
Goal attack Susan Pettitt was the only Giants player picked in the squads.
Newcastle has not had a player take the court for Australia in decades.
