The group of 12 boys from St Michael’s Primary School travelled to The King's School in Parramatta on Wednesday, June 28 for the finals.
The day saw 20 teams and hundreds of talented and enthusiastic young rugby players compete in two divisions.
St Michael’s, coached by Clint Brown, reached the final after coming second in the competition for the Newcastle-Hunter region.
Even though the Parramatta weather was miserable on Wednesday, the Nelson Bay team won the first three preliminary matches ensuring them a spot in the semi finals.
St Michael’s powered through the semis and moved into the grand final where they faced Terrigal Public School.
They were unable to maintain their winning streak, going down to Terrigal 30-10.
“The boys played with great tenacity and sportsmanship throughout the whole day and they should be very proud of themselves,” St Michael’s principal Helen Bourne said.
The school made the trip to Parramatta on a bus donated by Fingal Bay Sports Club.
“It is wonderful to see the support of the local community behind our local students,” Ms Bourne said.
