Port Stephens Council raised $4700 in June through a trivia night held at Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.
The funds have been donated to the Mark Hughes Foundation and the Jimmy Jurd Fund.
More than 200 people attended the trivia night.
Former Newcastle Knights NRL player Mark Hughes attended the evening to share his personal story of brain cancer diagnosis and to thank staff for their generosity.
“It was a real thrill to have Port Stephens Council host a fund-raiser for my foundation,” Mr Hughes said.
“It is actually quite humbling to see how much support we have received from right across the country, and in particular locally in the Hunter.
“The turn-out at Raymond Terrace Bowling Club was great and everyone was incredibly generous.
“It was a really fun event and the funds raised are incredibly appreciated.”
Stephen Crowe, Port Stephens Council’s communications section manager, said it was great to see everyone get into the spirit of the night and raising money for a good cause.
“Brain cancer is an insidious disease that has taken many good people, and it was nice to see staff digging deep to fund the search for a cure,” he said.
Of the funds raised, $4000 will go to the Mark Hughes Foundation to support brain cancer research, while $720 raised from the auctioning of a Knights jersey will go to the Jimmy Jurd Fund to help those who are undergoing treatment.
