In a high quality match, played at No. 1 Sportsground in Newcastle, the Bay put it to their rivals but eventually went down 10.6 (66) to 2.3 (15).
The Marlins had a number of opportunities early in the game but were unable to capitalise on the scoreboard.
Newcastle were able to take advantage and storm to a 51 point victory.
Marlins coach-player Lauren Cooper and her team plenty to do if they are to turn the tables when finals start next month.
Pippa Smyth and Lisa Steane were standouts for the Marlins with Emma Kelly, Hayley West, Cooper and Annalise Nortonalso having strong games.
In reserve grade the Marlins continued their push for a finals berth with a 68 point win over Gosford to remain in fifth position.
Tim Divall, Luke Bell, Joel Erickson, Glen Stone and Matthew White were among the team’s best.
Divall kicked four goals.
The premier men’s side had the bye.
Next week, the Marlins premier men’s team will make the trip to Warners Bay whilst the women travel to Singleton looking to return to the winning list.
