The trick when targeting squid is to retrieve the jig at a walking pace so that it travels around mid-water depth. Hottest spots inside the Port include Shoal Bay jetty, the sea grass meadows and Nelson Bay Marina. Outside the harbour, head south to all the quiet protected bays from Fingal to Birubi. Toss out, slowly retrieve and hang on.
All my early morning snapper spots in front of the Outerlight off Point Stephens have been invaded by thumping tailor, green backs with sharp teeth that easily bite through line. The best option is to float a pilchard down a berley trail on a set of ganged 3x5/0 hooks. If your bait sinks below the tailor you will catch a snapper. The beaches are produce cracker bream and tailor. Early on the top of the tide is ideal, particularly on Stockton and Fingal.
