The NSW Government has rolled out digital boat licences, meaning skippers can now ‘carry’ their licence on a smart device rather than in a wallet or purse.
“Tide times, life jackets, fuel, fishing tackle, there’s a lot to keep in mind when heading out on the water,” the Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey, said.
“Soon there will be one less item you will need to remember and as long as you have your phone you’ll have your licence.
“Digital licences can be accessed or renewed within minutes not days, which is great news for boating enthusiasts.”
The only exception to the digital roll out is for “personal watercraft” such as jetskis.
Licence holders for these type of vessels need to carry physical licences, as photo identification is required.
Those who choose to carry only a digital licence must ensure their device remains charged and accessible.
Boat driving licences and vessel registration can now be done through the Service NSW app.
Boaters need to download the Service NSW app and link Maritime Services to their MyService NSW account.
The Responsible Service of Alcohol, Responsible Conduct of Gambling Competency Card and Recreational Fishing Fee went digital in November last year.
According to the NSW Government, it issues more than 23 million licences and permits for more than 760 different categories each year.
Mrs Pavey said the move to a digital platform not only makes it easier for boaters, but also helps authorities make the waterways safer.
“By removing paperwork and embracing technology we are providing customers with a product that is fit for purpose in the digital age,” she said.
