I am continually amazed that so many Port residents are yet to visit Broughton Island. I have just returned from a few days, fishing and wandering around the island, which I believe to be the ‘jewel in the crown’ of this beautiful region.

Snapper, kingfish and mulloway swim over the extensive reef system surrounding the island, while the summer attracts cracker whiting and flathead onto the beaches. The fishing is excellent, but there is far more to Broughton with whales, seals, turtles, giant sting rays and dolphins cruising through the water.
Rangers within National Park and Wildlife deserve a huge pat on the back, particularly for their successful efforts to eradicate rabbits, rats and cockroaches. The natural vegetation has returned along with a resurgence in bird life.
The island holds many secrets from the Worimi, Greek, Italian, Chinese, French and pioneer commercial fishermen who, at times, have called the island home.
