The suburb lies to the east of the Hunter River and to the south of the town of Raymond Terrace.
Heatherbrae is bisected by the Pacific Highway. At the 2011 census it had a population of 492.
Most of the population lives to the west of the Pacific Highway in a housing subdivision while some residents live to the east of the highway in a semi-industrial area.
Remaining residents live in rural and semi-rural areas adjacent to the highway and throughout the rest of the suburb.
Heatherbrae stands in close proximity to the junction of the Hunter and Williams rivers and is a short drive away from Grahamstown Dam.
The Hunter Region Botanic Gardens are the main attraction to the area which comprise of a spectacular 140 hectares of themed gardens and offer natural bush land walks.
Raymond Terrace is forecast to accommodate an additional 300 dwellings and 1600 jobs by 2031.
This will be provided through infill development and the identification of land to be zoned for business purposes at Heatherbrae, most notably a bulky goods depot.
Raymond Terrace is to provide the higher order functions (e.g. court house & speciality retail stores) of a regional centre to not only support its own population growth, but to service the surrounding growth centres such as Heatherbrae.
