Police will allege that the man pushed a volunteer to the ground and threatened him and a number of bystanders during the junior game, held last Saturday in Dubbo.

The game was called off 90 seconds before full-time as violence and verbal abuse allegedly broke out.

"The referee was assaulted by a spectator and one of the ... players was also assaulted by a spectator," Dubbo and District Junior Rugby League president Neil Milgate told the Daily Liberal.

"Verbal threats were also made by spectators."

A 37-year-old man was arrested and taken to Dubbo Police Station about an hour after the game ended.

He was charged with affray, behaving in an offensive manner in or near a public place and stalking or intimidation with the intent to cause fear of physical harm.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in Dubbo Local Court in November.

Mr Milgate described the incident as an "absolute disgrace" and said the Western Division and Country Rugby League were also conducting investigations into the game between St John's and Dubbo City Magpies.

He said things turned ugly when Magpies players and spectators allegedly attacked the opposing team and its supporters.

This is not the first time junior sports games have been disrupted by violence.

A spectator was charged last week after allegedly arming himself with an iron bar when a verbal fight broke out at a junior soccer match in Sydney's north-west between St Mary's high school and Westfield Sports High School.

A grandfather was convicted of affray last year after an under-12s junior rugby league match in Sydney's south erupted into a violent 20-man brawl.
