Over all the years of writing this column, this is the first time that a numbfish has been featured, and there is a reason for that. Apart from the fact that they are inedible and they fight like a sugar bag, the numbfish is capable of producing severe shock, causing temporary paralysis.

The numbfish is also referred to as a coffin ray, which reflects its poor attitude. Medowie champion Dave Cashel is the only person I know who has figured out how to hold one up for the camera. I have been unfortunate enough to have come in contact with a ‘numby’ and it is not pleasant, a fair dinkum zot! I have been told that if you hold a light bulb in one hand and touch a numbfish with the other, the light will go on. Don’t quote me.
On that note, I would like to welcome all our holiday visitors to beautiful Port Stephens. The fishing in recent months has been sensational. Luderick and bream off the breakwall, snapper over all the reefs from Birubi to Broughton Island and bream and tailor off the beaches, particularly Stockton and Fingal. Enjoy your holiday and avoid numbfish.
