Three weeks into the campaign it has already raised $2500 on its way to $10,000.
“Our group exists entirely on donations and we’re really excited by this response,” PSK fundraising officer and director Anita Marshall said.
All funds raised will go toward day-to-day expenses that include veterinary medications and tests, rescue apparatus, intensive care and rehabilitation facilities, leaf storage sheds, education campaigns, help plant koala food tree plantations and to restore bushland to better sustain wild koalas.
“It seems to be a very popular way of raising money for wildlife its only our first time,” Ms Marshall said.
“We had a guess at how much we should ask for being our first time.
“We’re not there yet, we’ve got a long way to go.”
“We’ve had donations come in from Germany, Canada, the US and the UK.”
Ms Marshall put the success of the campaign down to the reach of the not-for-profit organisation’s Facebook page which has 12,000 followers – including people overseas.
“We’re finding most of the people donating are coming from our Facebook page,” she said.
“The videos that our carers post of the koalas that have been rescued are always well received,” she said.
“We had one video posted last week that reached over 5000 people – they are shared a lot.”
A mortgage broker by day, Ms Marshall was approached in April to help with the fundraising. Soon after in June Ms Marshall was involved in the PSK fundraiser at Horizons Golf Resort at Salamander Bay.
“We raised $13,000 at Horizons,” she said.
“They asked me to become a director of fundraising.
“It’s very special when this is one of the last populations on the east coast of Australia.
“There are actually a lot of roles Port Stephens Koalas can use help with, they’re always after help.”
