DPI will host six free Gone Fishing Day community events along the NSW coast on October 15. One of them will be in the Bay.
Bryan van der Walt, manager of the NSW DPI’s recreational fisheries programs, said Gone Fishing Day is a chance for the members of the community to cast a line and learn more about fishing.
“It doesn't matter if you haven’t fished before or if you’re the keenest of anglers, Gone Fishing Day is for everyone,” Mr van der Walt said.
“Fishing is one of our state’s most popular recreational activities, with more than 850,000 anglers dropping a line in each year.”
Recreational fishing contributes $3.4 billion for the state’s economy each year and accounts for more than 14,000 full-time jobs.
The six free DPI community fishing events will be run on Sunday from 9am to 3pm at:
- Botany Bay, Dolls Point, Peter Depena Reserve
- Coffs Harbour Jetty Foreshore Park
- Nelson Bay foreshore, Victoria Parade (eastern groyne)
- Lake Illawarra, Judbooley Parade foreshore (north side of Windang Bridge)
- Albury, Noreuil Park foreshore
- Inverell, Campbell Park, Captain Cook Drive
Mr van der Walt said anglers will not need a fishing license to take part in the day.
Free, fun-filled fishing activities at each location will include:
- How-to fish workshops
- Casting comps
- Goodie bags with bonus lures
- Expert fishing tips
- Touch tanks
- Kids' activities
- Activity marquees
