There is more action on the Nelson Bay breakwall than there is in the Moscow Circus. Bream have gone crackers with broad shouldered, bright-eyed thumpers over 1.5kg trying to pull the fishermen off the wall. Great to see more ladies doing battle with the bream, particularly Melissa Silvino who managed to bounce a couple up the rocks. Baits and techniques are varied with diced pilchards and cooked prawns being the preferred baits. The technique is simple – when the bream pulls, you pull harder.

Crabs are restless inside the Port with blue swimmers doing a slow tango off Fenninghams Island. Mud crabs are doing the Maroubra stomp along Karuah River. Set traps with fresh or frozen mullet. Toss a plastic for flathead or drift for trumpeter whiting while waiting for the crabs to dance into your trap.
Congratulations to Benny Doolan and his helpers who organised a very successful Gone Fishing Day on Sunday.
Clarification: For years, all flathead displayed in this article, over 70cms, have been released.
