The six-person committee is currently running at half strength after three women had to step down from their positions earlier this year.
Cathy Turner, president of the group which supports women on the Tomaree Peninsula going through cancer treatment, said if a full committee is not elected at the November annual general meeting there was a real risk it would have to fold or go on a hiatus.
“We don’t want that to happen,” Ms Turner said. “It’s something close to our hearts.
“I had cancer myself so I know exactly what it’s like. To have someone or something like this group to give you a helping hand, it’s a huge help. It takes a huge load off.”
Port Stephens Women’s Cancer Support Group is not-for-profit and is run by volunteers.
It was established in 2012 and began offering services in 2013. In the past five years, the group has helped more than 20 women.
The aim of the group is to offer support and assistance to women with any form of cancer through every stage of their journey.
Services the group provide include transport to treatment in Newcastle, house cleaning, lawn mowing, dog walking and child care.
The group also create a social outlet and networking opportunity for women, those who have cancer or are in remission. Morning teas are held monthly.
Other social events have also be arranged in the past, however, due to the lack of committee members and volunteers, there have been no additional activities organised in the past six months.
“We haven’t been able to organise any fund-raising lately because we just haven’t had the manpower,” committee member Susan Sams said.
The services the group offer are free to patients, which makes fund-raising vital.
All committee positions need to be filled at the AGM which will be held at Nelson Bay Golf Club from 5.30pm on November 1. A president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and two committee member positions will need to be filled. To be on the committee, you must be a member of the group which costs $5 per year.
Ms Turner said taking on a committee role may seem daunting, but it did not equate to a full-time job and involved plenty of social events.
