The toilets near to the water tower have been the target of regular graffiti attack and after new toilets were built closer to Irrawang Street, Port Stephens Council listed it as surplus to needs.
Former councillor Peter Kafer had fought to retain the toilets in March. As directed, the staff then consulted with the community and brought a fresh report before the councillors last week.
Taking this into consideration they agreed there was more value in retaining the toilets despite any vulnerability to attack.
“I move that council cease all plans to demolish these toilets,” Cr Arnott said last Tuesday.
“I’ve been in people’s houses where their toilets have been in worse shape,” Cr Giacomo Arnott said.
Cr Jaimie Abbott seconded the motion and it was carried.
