Dave Sams, a Port Stephens Medal recipient long-time member of area’s suicide prevention network, is one of five finalists in the Hunter and Central Coast section of the awards, which is run by Lifeline.
The biennial award recognises “local unsung heroes” who have been through big challenges yet “find the courage to give back to their community”, Lifeline Hunter Central Coast regional manager Rob Sams said.
The winner will be announced at a fund-raising event at Foghorn Brewhouse in Newcastle on Friday, October 20.
At the event, the host of the ABCTV Man Up series Gus Woland, Newcastle Jets’ CEO Lawrie McKinna and former Anglican diocese business manager and 2017 Lake Macquarie Citizen of the Year John Cleary will discuss the importance of resilience and share some of the stories of brass blokes they have encountered.
“The award and the event is an opportunity to inspire others and give them hope,” Mr Sams from Lifeline said.
“Funds raised at the event will be used to run Lifeline’s local face to face counselling, crisis support, training and bereavement support services.”
Mr Sams joined Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network after his son, Robert, took his life in 2003. He was instrumental in the creation of Solace Park in Boat Harbour.
He is also a founding member and now co-ordinator of the Survivors of Suicide bereavement support group.
His latest project is installing of signage across Port Stephens to let people know how to access crisis support.
