The three scholarships – each worth $1000 – are to support Port Stephens women, in reward for their community contributions across the arts, culture, environment, business, community, health or sport.
“These scholarships are a real chance for women in Port Stephens to expand their knowledge, skill or experience in a field of their interest – whether that’s achieving a personal goal, or one that contributes to the wider community,” Port Stephens Council’s acting community development and enagement coordinator Liz Akerman said.
It’s the first time the council has offered the scholarships.
All women aged 16 years and over, who have an important goal they would like to achieve, are encouraged to apply for one of the 2018 scholarships.
“A big thanks must go to former councillor Sally Dover, who was the driving force behind this initiative,” Ms Akerman said.
Salamander Bay Rotary president Darcy Geale said Rotary was proud to partner with the council in the initiative.
“The scholarships will encourage further valuable participation by women in our community,” Mr Geale said.
“As a Rotary club, one of our key focuses is the involvement of youth in the future of our community, and this scholarship program is one way that we can encourage that.”
Applications for the Port Stephens International Women’s Day Scholarship Program must be submitted here by 5pm on Sunday, January 28.
Scholarship recipients will be announced on International Women’s Day at the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay’s International Women’s Day lunch on March 8.
