Kmart Salamander Bay officially launched its annual charity event last week with the first donations already appearing under the tree.
Staffer Mikayla Martin has been coordinating this year’s event and is encouraging people to give what they can to make Christmas a little more special for some one less fortunate.
“I like to think that people doing it tough will have a much better Christmas because of this and at this time of year, it’s always good to help out,” she said.
To date, more than 15,859 gifts have been given to the Salamander store for people who would otherwise go without.
This year, there are five different ways that Port residents can help out.
According to Ms Martin, shoppers can place a gift under the tree at any Kmart store, opt to add a little extra to their transaction by clicking the Wishing Tree logo at the self serve checkout, drop spare change in the collections box at any register, take a bauble valued at $5, $7,or $10 off the Wishing Tree and scan it at any register to contribute or give online at kmart.com.au/wishingtree.
The appeal aims to support countless children, adults and seniors and Ms Martin is hoping that no one will be left out.
“Every year it seems teenage boys seem to miss out,” she said.
“It’d be great to get DVDs or video games for them. The virtual reality goggles would be awesome.”
She also added that the gifts don’t need to be purchased from Kmart.
The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal draws to a close on Christmas Eve.
