Police on Monday arrested a 42-year-old man at Nelson Bay, charging him with affray and causing reckless grievous bodily harm, after a 44-year-old man was left in a critical condition and needed to be placed in an induced coma and on life support.
It is alleged a verbal argument turned physical outside the victim’s Port Stephens home shortly before 10pm on Friday.
Detectives said the man suffered a serious head injury and was still believed to be in a critical condition in hospital.
The reason for the initial argument was still unclear but it was under investigation.
The 42-year-old fronted Raymond Terrace Local Court on Wednesday where he did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.
The matter was adjourned to December 19.
Police urged potential witnesses or anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
