Police said the 20-year-old man and his girlfriend were lucky to walk away from the collision which occurred on Charlestown Road at Charlestown on Wednesday.
The man is a provisional P1 licence holder for an automatic car.
Police said the man had bought the manual car less than 24 hours before the collision and that it was a “total write off”.
The man was issued infringement notices for negligent driving and not complying with conditions of licence as he was an automatic licence holder only.
Five demerit points were deducted from his license.
