Earlier, July 17:
Raymond Terrace is in for two action-packed days of rugby league with the start of the 2018 PCYC Nations of Origin sevens tournament on Wednesday.
Twenty-five Aboriginal nations have fielded teams in the sixth annual rugby league sevens competition, which this year is for the under-16 age group only.
Nations have the option to enter a female and male team into the rugby league competition. As the host nation, Worimi is able to enter two teams into the male and female competitions, which it has done this year.
All participating sporting teams must consist of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal young people with a ratio of 70:30 in the formation of the teams. This is to promote the event’s aims promoting reconciliation, education and cultural identity.
The rugby league action kicked off at Lakeside Sports Complex in Raymond Terrace on Wednesday morning, following an official opening ceremony.
High profile dignitaries including NSW Police Commissioner Michael Fuller, Dubbo MP and the Minister for Police and Emergency Services Troy Grant and PCYC NSW CEO Dominic Teakle each spoke at the opening ceremony.
“You are the future,” Commissioner Fuller said. “Over the next couple of years you will come through school, through your education process, into employment and you will be the future. Future police officer, future accountant, mechanic – you can be, at the end of the day, anything you want to be.
“For us, whilst it is about having fun, it is about team work, it’s also about saying ‘we are here to support you’. We want you to achieve and be the best that you can.
“My challenge to you over the next couple of days is to, one, have fun but don’t underestimate your ability to be a leader and future mentor and the impact that you can have on your community.”
Worimi elder Uncle John Ridgeway OAM did the welcome to country.
The final games for the Wednesday competition will be played at 5pm. The action will pick up again at 8.10am on Thursday.
Finals footy will be held from about 10.40am on Thursday, which will run through until 3pm.
The first Nations of Origin boxing tournament will be held in Nelson Bay, at Port Stephens PCYC, from 5pm.
